Rumor 2.0

Okay, did I get sucked in?  Yesterday I blogged that Google was purchasing Feedburner.  Apparently there has not yet been any formal announcement. My source was The RSS Blog. If one Googles both Feedburner and Google, this seems to be a very rampant rumor.

I would have normally checked news media sources before making such a post, but I was in a hurry while posting from a hotel room while on a business trip. This taught me a lesson about the blogosphere. The story may still turn out to be true, but it is not yet fact.

Update on June 4: It’s true! Feedburner purchase confirmed.

Google Purchases Feedburner

I know many of you who read my blog, do not use RSS. It’s time to get with it and learn this technology.  With the explosion of information, one of your primary tools to weed out and access selective information is by intelligent use of RSS.

One confirmation that the open market agrees with my view is that Google just purchased Feedburner (a 100% RSS technology play firm) for $100 million. To learn more about RSS, watch this tutorial.

This blog uses Feedburner for its RSS feed.

Google Book Search – New Features

Quite frankly, I’m not postive when this capability appeared in Google Book Search. I was checking some of my Google Book Search books which I have saved as favorites, and I am now able to scroll through the entire contents of each book.  If it stays around, this is a huge new feature. Here are some examples:

I need to spend more time with Google Book Search.  Here is an earlier screencast / tutorial I’ve created on the topic.

Stephen Downes correctly noted in this post’s comment, that it’s only an expanded preview.  Drat!  Still, the expanded preview is nice, and one can normally search within a book to pull up specific pages.

Eight Pounds of Water

Perhaps I should have given the classic title to this post: The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner! Those of you who are regular readers of this blog know that I’m training for Grandma’s Marathon. It’s now four weeks away.

Yesterday evening I completed my last loooooonnnng training run (21 miles). The weather conditions were sunny, windy, and 88 degrees F (hot). Over the course of the run I lost 8 pounds.  Considering I’m thin, and normally weigh in at 180 pounds (6′ 2"), that’s 4.4% of my body weight! I’m still re-hydrating some 16 hours later. You may virtually experience in under four minutes last week’s run in Northern Minnesota. It took me longer!

I’m now in the official taper period.  Next Saturday’s run will only be 15 miles! Finally, you may watch a Google Maps Tutorial that I created around this particular run.

From Northstar Lake to Shanghai

My Run for China’s Children spans the globe! In early June a benefit auction will take place in Shanghai, China, 100% of the proceeds will go towards rebuilding the JiaYou primary school. Pretty Cool!

Here is a short video I created that will be shown at the charity auction. I hope you enjoy the young girls from a local Shanghai school who sing "Pass It On" (download mp3). Please note that the video may take a moment to load. It’s worth the wait!

Here are the English lyrics:

    • It only takes a spark to get a fire going.
    • And soon we’ll understand infinite possibilities.
    • That’s how it is with Learning.
    • Once you’ve experienced it, you want to teach; you want to give; you want to pass it on.
    • That’s how it is with Learning. Once you’ve experienced it, you want to teach; you want to give; you want to pass it on.

Finally, if you would like to take a virtual 21.3 training run with me … here is last Saturday’s run through the forests of Northern Minnesota … ending at Northstar Lake. You’ll be able to experience in a few minutes what took be just under four hours!

Finally, I hope this has convinced you to join my growing list of donors. Remember, not only am a running Grandma’s Marathon, but I’m also a donor. $6,000 will rebuild the JiaYou school, and I’ve raised $4,840 to date. (learn more about my run, and see the updated total). Pledges may be emailed to me, Rich Hoeg, at rhoeg@comcast.net. Donations are tax deductible in the United States.

Here are two photos of JiaYou, and the Shanghai Girls Choir.
