Competing on Analytics

There is a newly published business book, Competing on Analytics, which is worth some attention. You can go out and buy the book, but first I would recommend reviewing these resources. The first item is a podcast interview with the book’s co-authors:

If you’re the visual type, you can read this book review from James Taylor’s Enterprise Management Blog.

I leave it to you to conduct your own exploration; however the book is not just about stats! If you have access to the Harvard Business Review, Professor Davenport (one of the authors) also published an article in the January 2006 issue with the same title.

The Dads Fought – The Sons Build

Attached to this posting are photos taken at Christmas in 1952 from the Korean War. My Dad was serving as a MASH doctor in America's fight against North Korea and China. Now 55 years later I am partnered with Dj, a software engineer from China. Our goal is to build an elementary school in rural China. Although our dad's never fought on the same battlefield, Dj's father served in the artillery and shelled USN and Taiwanese positions across the straits of Formosa. Thus, the Dads fought; the sons build.

Three months from today, I will run Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota (my home town). My run is a personal quest to build that school. Including my own $600 donation, as of today, $3,330 has been pledged ($6k builds one school).

Please help me build a school.

Post Update: School has been built! Thank you!

eMail your pledge to me, Rich Hoeg, at rhoeg@comcast.net. All donations are tax deductible in the United States. My formal partner in this quest is the China Education Tomorrow Foundation. You may always view the updated donor list, and pledge total by linking to my initial Run for China Post.

Today's training run was 16 miles. It took me 2 hours and 30 minutes.  I'm tired and sore!

Second Life – The Saga Continues

I'm continuing to do research within Second Life (SL). Although I've yet to become convinced of the business value, the concept of simulations and virtual realities where business application scenarios may be explored and analyzed is appealing. After all, ten years ago, who would have thought that the web would have grown to it's pervasive presence?

Thus, here is a Second Life tutorial / overview I created with screenshots and narrative from my travels through SL. My goal is to help the viewer understand SL from a potential business perspective, starting with Orientation Island and then progressing through islands that demonstrate potential business applications, with a final stop for recreation (motorcycle racing)! The tutorial may take a moment to load; please be patient.

  • A Second Life Tutorial / Overview
(the first slide has no audio … by design!)
    • Breeze Module Notes: Total running time – 17 minutes

I owe a great debt of gratitude to three individuals who without their kind assistance, I would not have been able create this tutorial. They are:

Both organizations have heavy presences within SL, and personally helped tutor me. The links I've given are not actually to their companies; rather they are to Web 2.0 descriptions of their efforts. Take a look!

Here are links to some of my other Second Life postings:

If you've read this far, and still are wondering what this Second Life stuff is all about, I invite you to either click upon the two attached images which give a quick SL executive overview, or link to the full article in BaseLine. Baseline is a magazine which specifically focuses upon "where leadership meets technology".  The publisher, Ziff Davis, is a leading publisher of technology related magazines.

Finally, I hope you've noticed that my blog does not have advertisements. My blog is a professional endeavor, and I'm not trying to sell you, the reader, anything. My commitment to education is deep, and personal. Please read about my "Run for China's Children", and help me build a school in rural China. Thank you.

Lego Autopilot

This is cool. Who said Legos are just for our kids! Legos are being used to try and build a sub $1,000 UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle):

These postings are from the Long Tail blog. If you haven’t had the opportunity, you need to learn more about the "long tail" concept as it relates to the demand curve.  The blog focuses upon how computing power is changing our global economy.

Here is a super podcast interview of the author of the business book, The Long Tail:

My thanks to Paramesh Ramanathan from Bangalore, who keyed me into the Lego Autopilot posting.
