Android Apps Development

In my post, Practical Android for the Business User, I promised a follow-up on Android development (the SDK or software development kit). As a preface to the rest of my post you need to know that I HATE syntax. Luckily for me Google has created two Android development environments. The first environment which is not reviewed in this post involves learning specific code in conjunction with JAVA.

Being a five year veteran coach of Lego Robotics, I was thrilled to discover Google's other Android development environment … which is a LabView / Lego Robotics Programming like visual building blocks development environment, the App Inventor:

I found the service straight forward, and with a little bit of effort, not difficult to learn. Here is a short video overview: (access much more extensive training and videos)

Remember, you don't need to be a registered Android Marketplace developer to install your own apps. There are Android apps like APKatcher which allow you to email your completed app ready for installation to your Android smartphone. (see screenshot given below)

Finally, here is a screenshot of the actual App Inventor environment.

Although not strictly related to actual development in Android using Google, I did discover that lots of people (including me) had difficulty getting the ADB service to initially run (a necessary software installation step). Here is some key information which I discovered (my thanks to ksfrogman who posted this information on AndroidForum.Com):

  • Copy the adb, AdbWinApi.dll, and AdbWinUsbApi.dll files from your SDK platform tools folder to your tools folder
  • If your smartphone does not have default Google USB drivers, an approach like the one I used for my HTC Incredible smartphone may work for installing drivers.

Good luck! Have fun!

Public Radio / TV Annoyance

It's Saturday morning … time to pay bills. In the mail are letters from both Minnesota Public Radio and Twin Cities Public Television. Both organizations want me to renew. Hmmm … thought I renewed recently. Searched their letters in depth trying to find my renewal date. None to be found. I'm still getting both magazines; thus I'm obviously an active member.

Annoyance!

I've been a member of both organizations for well over 25 years at the "standard" family level. Don't you find it annoying that you now receive so many solicitations from public radio and TV? I know everyone needs money; so do I! I do not regard either network as "non commercial" broadcasting anymore. I now tend to "trash" all their solicitations for more money as a new letter seems to arrive every month. The net result is I may end up being late some year with my actual renewal. Show me my renewal date!

A Nerd’s LinkedIn News

Welcome to …

In short, welcome to the Northstar Nerd's test of targeting LinkedIn advertising. Back in March I posted about how enthused I with the prospects of targeted LinkedIn ads (see post). You can watch my tutorial which demonstrates the power of demographics and targeted advertisements. While Google AdWords is great, I believe targeted advertisements based upon demographics are much better.

This morning a free offer from LinkedIn arrived which granted me a $100 coupon to try their advertisement service. My four earlier bullets are my campaign options which will be selectively applied. Click upon either image given below to expand and learn more, but basically LinkedIn will ultimately apply the advertisement which nets the best clickthrough yields. I will blog my results. Each advertisement links back to my blog, NorthstarNerd.Org.
